Hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation: is it really dangerous?

چکیده

In this issue of RESPIRATORY CARE, Lurie and colleagues report a laboratory investigation in which they compared ventilation rates of 10 breaths/min and 2 breaths/min during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) of swine.1 This is an important hypothesis-generating study regarding cardiopulmonary interactions during CPR. In their model, their data establish that carotid-artery blood flow and brain tissue oxygen tension were lower with the 2-breaths/min strategy than with the 10-breaths/min strategy. However, they make an unsupportable claim based on that physiological observation, that “it is clear that low or no ventilation during CPR can be dangerous and should not be recommended except in circumstances where untrained CPR providers are not willing to perform mouth-to-mouth.”

A randomized cross-over study of the quality of cardiopulmonary resuscitation among females performing 30:2 and hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation

BACKGROUND Hands-Only cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is recommended for use on adult victims of witnessed out-of-hospital (OOH) sudden cardiac arrest or in instances where rescuers cannot perform ventilations while maintaining minimally interrupted quality compressions. Promotion of Hands-Only CPR should improve the incidence of bystander CPR and, subsequently, survival from OOH cardiac ar...

Evaluating Knowledge Level of the Medical Students about Children Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation in Aliebne University of Medical Science

Introduction: Awareness of pediatric cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is obligatory for every graduated medical student. In fact, only correct and effective Cardiopulmonary resuscitation can increase the survival rate of patients with cardiopulmonary arrest and since CPR techniques and maneuvers should be done in a specific way for children, it is important to evaluate the knowledge of pedia...

Ultrasound guided chest compressions during cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Background Early and effective chest compressions have a well known pivot role in cardiopulmunary resuscitation (CPR) and 2010 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation have strongly reinforced its importance. The efficacy of chest compressions depends on hands position and on compression technique. Medical education can improve chest compression technique, while the choice of th...

An alternative resuscitation algorithm significantly reduces hands-of time during CPR: a full-scale simulation study

Background A reduction in hands-off time during resuscitation leads to increased survival. We have previously shown that hands-off time can be reduced using our alternative cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) algorithm SOWS (Stop Only While Shocking), but only in small and limited simulations. We designed the present study to compare SOWS to the current European Resuscitation Council (ERC) 201...

Retention of cardiopulmonary resuscitation skills after hands-only training versus conventional training in novices: a randomized controlled trial

OBJECTIVE Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training can improve performance during simulated cardiac arrest; however, retention of skills after training remains uncertain. Recently, hands-only CPR has been shown to be as effective as conventional CPR. The purpose of this study is to compare the retention rate of CPR skills in laypersons after hands-only or conventional CPR training. METHOD...
